I’m usually pretty slack with these things but I got really excited about this Bear Fight book competition thing and actually filled out the form and have submitted the final piece.

So here is the actual image that has been submitted, they required it in grey-scale which was my intention in the first place however I ended up using some ‘warm greys’ which changed the tone a little.

I like the colour version slightly more but there is a lot to be said for how it comes up in grey-scale.

I also think they’d make a pretty cool iPhone wallpaper, let me know if anyone does that because it would be neat to hear!

Which one do you guys prefer?

I totally envisioned it with a black background with maybe a hint of some ceiling beams. And for some reason, bloody dripping claws wouldn't seem out of place.

    Did you get my email?

  2. Lee says:

My concern was that there would be too much black in the illustration, I wanted almost florescent light for it.

I did get your email and replied, you might need to check your spam folder because I've written to you a couple of times and not sure my mail is getting through :(

Either it's getting caught, or we're running into the time difference. I sent the email about twelve hours ago and I'm actually at work right now 9:47AM local time. So, I may get home in 5.5 hrs and find an email from 'Stralia :)

What's the first rule of Bear Fight Club?

I like how they turned out to be (in my eyes) roughed up versions of Yogi bears :P

  6. Lee says:

LOL fair enough, my email has a lot further to go :)

  7. Lee says:

I would like to tell you but I can't really talk about it… oh.

  8. Lee says:

Cheers I wanted to give a more cartoon'ish feel to them to hopefully make it a little more of a clash in concepts.

I came very close to using actual cartoon bears like Yogi but didn't want to have to replicate their styles.

I just had a lot of fun with this which for me was the main thing.

  9. I'm doing a Bear Fight image too!
It's all done actually, just have to sign the agreement and then it's all done and done.

I love your bear fight club though, it's got a nice character to it. I think its the bear at the back slightly leaning in that does it for me.

I also think I prefer the slightly coloured one – it just has a nicer tone to it.

    Awesome!

Are you going to post a pic online? It's such a great idea for an indie publisher and as I've said over and over I'm just more than happy to be inspired to draw something and have some fun. Getting into the book would purely be icing at this stage.

We should start a weekly illustration meme on twitter!

I tried to invest something in each of the bears in the back to give them their own personalities, overkill I'm sure but like I said I really got into this and had a lot of fun.

  11. Yeah, I'm going to post mine. I've got the blog post all drafted up, but I'm going to wait until I get home from work and send off the forms before I actually publish it. I'll let you know when it's up.

And you're right, it was such a good idea for the publisher – I think they're going to be surprised at the sheer number of submissions.

A weekly illustration on the twitters would be a great idea! I'd definitely be in on being in on something like that. And there's definitely enough people around who would participate.

I was actually surprised how quickly my bear image came together, I don't really mind if I get into the book or not – it was just heaps of fun drawing it, and I think it's one of my favourite illustrations now!

I'm just trying to think through the best way to organise a Twitter Sketch Theme, I'm wondering if everyone if we could display the images through a Facebook fan page or a Posterous blog.

But I like the idea of having the whole week to work on the picture rather than the lunch doodles.

  13. Lee says:

That is awesome, everyone should go look!

  14. To be honest I always hated the lunchdoodle system. I find tumblr absolutely useless – especially when it comes to handling input from a large number of potentially random people – Not to mention It's really slow.

Some sort of custom system similar to http://tweaktoday.com/( though less tumblr-y ;) )

Has an in built theme voting system, anyone can post once they've registered an account – that way you can keep track of all illustrations by each username.

It's definitely something to think about.

  15. Lee says:

I hadn't seen that site before, I wish they offered up the source code ;)

I'm strongly leaning towards a Facebook Fan page as much as I hate their terminology. If someone is a fan of the page they can add their own images or I can link to where ever they are…

I'm just going to have to give this some more thought.
