It’s shaping up to be Wrath of Khan week here at Quit Your Day Job which frankly I don’t mind one little bit.  But I’m about to do something which goes against every fanboy urge I have and ask for something in the next Star Trek film.

No Khan please.

I know that hurts, I mean who asks for less Khan?!

But I considered it after the rumours started that they’d look to Khan for the sequel and I think that it is a really bad idea.

First off who are they going to get to play Khan?  I mean J.J. Abrams did an amazing job casting the crew of the Enterprise but Khan is like, well Khan.

Secondly this won’t be “Wrath of Khan” Khan this will be “Space Seed” Khan, so not the same vengeance seeking bare chested big hair guy that a lot of people would only know him as.  A side note, if you’ve never seen Space Seed I highly recommend it as it lays the foundation of Star Trek 2 and even then Khan was a worthy opponent.

The final thought I had was that you are going to be compared with Wrath of Khan and that’s not really an easy thing to live up to.  Who needs that kind of pressure?  It’s like singing ‘My Way’ and being compared to Frank Sinatra, even if you are no one is going to say that you’re better (well I won’t anyway, unless you score 9999 on SingStar).

Should the next Star Trek film feature Khan?

My suggestion would be to go with a stand alone storyline, something fun and awe inspiring.  I have some other things I don’t want to see in the next Trek film too:

  • Time travel
  • William Shatner
  • Romulans
  • Giant swollen hands (I’m not picking on the scene I’m just saying that you don’t want it to become your “thing”)
  • God

Anything else they should avoid?

    I want Tribbles!

    No Gorn or Trelane, either.

I'm actually okay with going back to the Romulan well. I like them. And it could be a decent follow-up with them taking in the Vulcan refugees.

And of course, any posting about Khan warrants this wonderful clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOZ8ykaxndQ

Did you see tribbles in the first one on Scotty's desk? That's enough tribbles for you.

  4. Lee says:

I don't think they can do the Gorn very well, they tried in Enterprise and it is never going to make anyone very happy.

And Trelane at the end of the day is just a Q and frankly I've had quite enough Q.

    Love that clip.

I am saying no to endangered species and returning probes.

I had to eat my words a bit when I said there was NO WAY they could effectively re-cast the OS cast. They got them all pretty right. BUT… recast the great Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalbán y Merino? No way! In everything I have seen him in, he totally owns his character – yes, even Grandfather Cortez in the Spy Kids franchise!

The Wikipedia entry for him is well worth a read, especially his “five stages of the actor”.

    So, yes, leave Khan alone!

(No one alive has the chest for it, anyway!)

Bring back Balok from The Corbomite Maneuver, I say! They could even get the original actor to play him; I don't think Clint Howard has aged a bit! :)
