If you take a look at the previous post on this blog you will see that I embedded a music video on my site via YouTube to share the fact that the Columbia Records band AC/DC were providing the music to the upcoming Marvel Studios film Iron Man 2.

Now I’ll tell you why I embedded the video before I cover my thoughts on it being stupidly barred from embedding.

A lot of you guys and girls read my blog because I talk about things that interest you, much in the same way that if we were to sit down to have a cup of coffee one day we would no doubt talk about the types of things that are posted here, aside from my scribbles or defacing of Star Wars screen shots.

So because this is how it works I thought you might be interested in a film coming out and in sharing we might get each other more excited about the film and talk to other people about it who in turn would possibly get excited, maybe enough so to share the information on their own blogs and spread the good word even further.

In social media circles I believe there’s a term for that, I think it is something along the lines of viral marketing or if you like word of mouth.

Now this is something that you want, unless of course your movie or song or whatever is really crap.  Then you’d rather not everyday people talking about it because they are going to say bad things and other people will listen to them and possibly pass that word along.

So that is why I embedded a released YouTube video on my page, because I was excited about it and wanted my readers (all three of you) to get excited too.

So what do I think of blocking the material from being embedded?

I think it’s a dumb move by whoever is responsible.  Basically you are putting a roadblock in front of my ability to make other people excited and aware of your material.  You know, people who will tell other people who will tell other people and so forth.

You basically look like dicks.

You make me look like a dick because I used my good will with my readers.

And that is dumb.

So in the spirit of viral promotion it would be awesome if you guys were to retweet this, share it on Facebook, Stumble it, Digg it and hang over your neighbour’s fence and tell them to come read!  Oh and tell them to tell someone too :)

I'm with you. From personal experience I can say that any time I run across “Embedding disabled by request” on a blog or Facebook, it's extremely rare for me to click through to watch whatever it is on YouTube. It says to me “we don't really want you to watch this, we just want to get clicks for advertiser revenue.” It puts a bad taste in my mouth.

There are battles within media corporations between the copyright lawyers and the promotional departments every day.

The way I am seeing this is Sony is sticking it to Paramount with this move. Simple as that.

Agreed, people are more likely to watch an embedded video than clicking through video links. If it is right there for them to play instantly. I always hate the embedding block, when I review music videos.

  4. leesargent says:

It says the exact same thing to me, which is a shame really because the director has been very cool sharing bits and pieces on Twitter.

I never thought about Sony's involvement though I'm told that AC/DC are notorious for this kind of thing – no AC/DC for digital download.

I REALLY hate the embedded block on movie trailers, now that is truly dumb (and not the case with Iron Man 2 it must be said)

  7. [...] Misguided companies that pass up free promotion because they think fans are going to be stupid with the access. This has irked me ever since my X-Phile days and the Phile community’s tussles with FOX. [...]
