As excited as I am over the Iron Man 2 trailer I didn’t think I’d go into quite as much detail as I did with the Star Trek trailer (yet another post lost to the ages).  But after reading Arkonbey’s comment to yesterday’s post I think that some discussion is in order and perhaps a little beverage consumption.

So go on run to the fridge and grab yourself a cold whatever your poison is and come back.

It’s OK, we’ll wait for you.

Mmmmmmm frosty.

Now did you watch the trailer?  Really?  Why did you think I put it up there?  Look just watch it now.

Pretty awesome huh?

So lets talk about what we’re seeing  and I’ll reprint what Arkonbey said for those too lazy to go back and read the other post:

The Senate hearing part of the trailer brings up an interesting point that the film probably won’t pursue. The Libertarian “you want my property? You can’t have it” and “I’ve successfully privatized world peace” reminds me about ‘power corrupts’. So, Tony Stark is (now) a Good Man and will help keep world peace and as the sole user of the most powerful weapon in the world HE decides who is good and who is bad? Not to say the US Government has made a great deal of fantastic decisions concerning world peace lately, but Tony could really ‘eff’ things up if he isn’t careful.

So in the trailer we see that Stark is being requested by the US government to hand over the weapon ‘Iron Man’ which I assume they want as Stark Enterprises was contracted by the government during the period that he built the Iron Man armour.  A little like if you work for Disney and you create a character it is then owned by Disney… which Iron Man kind of is… weird.

Of course Tony Stark is saying no in only the way that he can which probably doesn’t help the concern anyone might have over the character of the man who wields so much power.  It’s especially interesting that he is not alone in this movie Marvel universe as surely he must be considered one of the only forces able to take on the Hulk and there are more heroes coming.

The other point which has been handled with the utmost subtlety and unless you are a fan of the comic book you might not realise that Stark is an alcoholic, a bad one in which I mean he doesn’t know that he is at this stage.  I understand they are still not going to focus on that in this film but hopefully for the third.

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about the world knowing that Stark is Iron Man, it was never a big enough component of the comic book to really make me care one way or the other.  I guess the secret identity bit always creates some drama although in this context it does create the problems that Stark may face with the government.

The jumping out of the plane and the Stark Expo all seem like a bit of fun and is highlighting the capitalist consumer hype that I guess surrounds big companies today.  It is a stark (if you’ll forgive the use of the word) contrast to the world that Whiplash played by Mickey Rourke (who was great in The Wrestler) seems to be in and it is cool that they are at least trying to make some sort of connection between him and the Stark family so he may have some motivation.

The Black Widow and Nick Fury make appearances and some people are claiming to see a SHIELD badge on The Black Widow’s arm so maybe SHIELD decide having a loose cannon like Stark is not such a good idea, I have some sense of the Armour Wars especially when we see all the action sequences later on involving fan favourite War Machine.

War Machine looks AWESOME and accurate to the comics and you might note the new design of the Iron Man armour too in these pictures that I stole from QYDJ friend Jeff Caddick at his blog Caddickisms:

The triangle chest plate is consistent with the current design and one previous one but I’ve always been partial to the circle myself.

On paper, Whiplash’s whips sound pretty stupid but they seem to come up OK here in the trailer and I also like the way the race car is chopped up – I think that the Black Widow might save the day there?  I mean she’s got to do more than steal stuff??

Featuring AC/DC again in the trailer is a nice nod to the original and of course the use of Black Sabbath’s Iron Man is still inspired and perfect.

All this film does is make me wish for my birthday to get here quicker (something I don’t normally wish for but this is released here in Australia the day before my birthday).

So is this the film to beat this year?

It looks pretty good to me.
Is whiplash going to be the only baddy in it? It really annoys me that superhero film makers seem to need to cram as many villains into the film as they can.

There are a couple of political baddies and I'm not convinced that SHIELD have Tony's best interests at heart.

Sam Rockwell is playing Justin Hammer who was a rival of Stark's.

Is it the film to beat this year? Good question. Possibly. But there's also Tron Legacy. Iron Man is a bit more of a known entity at this point, which works in its favor, but Tron has the potential to totally blow my mind. I gotta give that one the nod, if only barely.

(btw, thanks for copying the pictures rather than using mine directly. I'm starting to get annoyed with how many people steal my bandwidth for that purpose.)

sweet trailer. great music. I'm really looking forward to it. Arkonbey's on point, a very tricky thing..this superpower thing. On the other hand..has for instance Batman done much more (except him not breaking cover that early) to keep missions in the government's control? I know I'm letting out the alcoholic part, but then again..Batman has some serious psychic issues.

  5. leesargent says:

There's nothing I hate more than people stealing your bandwidth and I've never really been too successful in stopping it, so yeah I'd never actually do that :)

Tron could work, I am surprised that there is this much buzz already over a film that possibly has limited appeal and won't be out until the end of the year – but people are excited.

  6. leesargent says:

It was always the appeal of the comic in that this very flawed man was just trying to do good in this amazing suit of armour. He was an alcoholic, had a bad heart and was considered by many around him to be arrogant and proud.

  7. arkonbey says:

I actually had a beer just before reading this. Until you mentioned it, I'd completely forgotten about the alcoholism! This could be more problematic without a secret identity; people knew that Tony Stark had a drinking problem, but his 'bodyguard' was okay.

And I didn't know that was Mickey Rourke. That ups the awesome factor.

humorous question: Why do the iron man/war machine masks, which are probably made with the most high-tech alloys available, make a sound when they close that is pretty much the one that the damper on my 1977 Vermont Castings 'Vigilant' cast iron woodstove makes…

  8. leesargent says:

It worked the other way too, people assumed that Iron Man screwed up and not Stark when he was driving the armour drunk.

As for your question, when you're on to a good thing…
