I understand why a studio would consider doing a remake of The Karate Kid. I mean it is a no brainer, who hasn’t wanted to have amazing Karate skills in various situations we’ve found ourselves in, especially as kids.
The appeal is undeniable and The Karate Kid dealt with exactly that, updating it for a current audience actually makes good financial sense from a studio point of view.
When hearing about it though I think I vomited a little in my mouth. No one likes a classic from their youth being superseded by a glossy remake, especially when you are talking about Will Smith’s son and Jackie Chan taking over.
It sounds like an awful idea, especially considering that Chan is a Kung Fu artist not Karate. So here is the trailer, as you watch try and work out what surprised me:
The part that actually surprised me is that I think I would actually want to see this film, it doesn’t look bad at all. I actually warmed up to the idea in the minute or so it took to watch, I even smiled at the fly scene.
Too much eggnog*?
What do you guys think?
* I don’t drink eggnog but really love the word.

I thought the same thing… Doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. I still have bad memories of Jaden Smith from the awful Day The Earth Stood Still remake, so he has some work to do to win me over.
See I didn't watch the The Day the Earth Stood Still the remake but I have indeed heard the legend of Smith's less than stellar performances.
I think this film could be quite charming, I'm expecting Jackie Chan to really help it.
Without Jackie Chan, it would suck big time. With him, it'll probably still suck big time, but at least it will be enjoyable…
Just rename it to the Wushu-kid and I'm giving it a greenlight haha.
It was going to be called “The Kung Fu Kid” for a little while there so I'm not really sure what happened there.
I dunno, judging from that trailer it has the potential to be at least as good as the original, of course Pat Morita was nominated for an academy award for the first film.
No sir, I don't like it. I see no crane kicking thingamajig, nor an eighties soundtrack, or that magic heated hand thing that Mr Miyagi did. It just isn't cricket.
Merry Christmas to you and Tracey.
The one thing I'll give it is that the training looks a little bit more intensive than the original KK; you know what with actually doing core exercises and stuff.
If you'd like to read a book about a Karate Kid-esque thing in real life, try “Autumn Lightning” by Dave Lowry.
Ahhhh see you did not study the trailer like I told you to, the magical crane stance can be seen in shadow during one of the sequences.
I wonder if there will be a super magic warm hand thing go on? They have to save something for the movie
A Merry Christmas to you too, we'll catch up in the new year.
I guess Chan will be a little more active than Morita was.
I might check out Autumn Lightning if I get the chance.
Jackie Chan is one of my favs. I think he'll make / break this film more than Smith.
I agree! Jackie Chan very rarely disappoints, his movies though…
Looks great. Can't believe people would bag Jaden Smith.
I haven't seen him in all that much so I'll reserve judgement
