I stopped posting my weekly reactions to Stargate Universe because frankly it was getting a little bleak to be so negative each week!! And also SGU is not the only program I watch so it seemed a shame to give so much page to a show that was giving me the shits more often than not.
I actually have cut down the telly watching and have been playing more games, which I’ll be writing about too but for now let’s keep a little focus.
Stargate: Universe
OK I didn’t say that I stopped watching SGU, I’ve kept watching since last I spoke about it and in that time I’ve seen one episode that interested me and one that was a weak return to the boring crap of the other episodes:
- Life - So they found a Repository of Knowledge device on the ship which is great and all except it didn’t actually look like one of those devices (even though yes it was a much earlier version but still it looks like one of the control chairs from SGA), no one can use it and I don’t even remember what else happened. I think they may have used the communication stones… whoops sorry about that I almost nodded off just talking about it.
- Justice – A couple of neat things happened in this episode the first of which is that Chloe actually had something to do for a change that didn’t involve pouting or having sex. It was a nice change of pace for her character. The other really neat thing was Young stranding Rush on the planet with the alien spacecraft. That was cool and completely fit into the earlier discussion when they were speculating if Young had just come to the realisation that the man who killed himself needed to be taken out for the good of the group. Rush really needed to be taken out of the group in a survival scenario. Now we have to wait for something like four months for the next episode which is VERY lame of SyFy. I hate how they break up a season like that! Just show the whole damn season!!!!
Flash Forward
Speaking of lame… Look the idea had me curious enough to have a look at the show and then we kept watching purely due to the five minute lead into the next episode that seemed interesting. But the show has a lot of problems, the least of which is not its very low ratings. There are giant holes in the plot, which is always going to be tricky when dealing with time travel anyway. Just by observing these futures causes them to change. No one in the future had a realisation expression on their face like they would have as they remembered the moment.
So technically none of the futures that they saw in the flash forward would be able to come true as it was exactly shown to them.
Beyond that the show has weird music choices, the quietest hospital on the planet, some very unlikeable characters and some very awkward acting. If it doesn’t come back I don’t think I’ll be too upset and will no doubt read the book.
V
I really enjoyed the first four episodes of V, it got down to the point, took on the right blend of concept from the original series and moved the story along. I actually quite like the actors in the show as well as they all seem to suit their characters. Even Scott Wolf whom I have noted on numerous occasion that I suspected he would irritate me even though he really hasn’t given me call to dislike him.
But I like the way the show is going, I hate that we have to wait for ages for the next episode.
Better off Ted
Saw the first two episodes of this and really liked it. I’ve got the whole first season sitting there for me to watch in time for the second season to come out, I was very excited to hear that the show was still going as I had heard that it was cancelled). I really didn’t want to start watching another show only to have to accept that it wasn’t coming back. It seems to be quite clever and has almost an Arrested Development meets Mad Men meets Muppets Labs feel to it for me.
Dr Who: The Waters of Mars
Is it nice seeing the Doctor again?
Sure.
Is this an original story?
No not really.
Is this even a good story?
Ummm it’s Dr Who though.
So no?
No.
The Dr Who special just felt like a filler waiting on the upcoming return of the Master and obviously the death of the current incarnation of the Doctor. I just feel with this episode and the previous ‘bus’ episode that two opportunities were really wasted on boring episodes. Was it bad though? I mean no, it looked fine, the performances are all fine, of course the Doctor’s carry on about being a Timelord felt pretty forced and out of place.
So that’s the main stuff I’ve been watching television wise, remember I’ve got Midnight Movie Club launching on Wednesday which has the retro movies I’ve been staying up late to watch!
So what have you been watching? Should I be watching that?

We've been watching movies, 'Watchmen' “Zombieland” 'Sean of the Dead' much better than TV right now.
And “Mysterious Cities of Gold” with the children which is awesome
There's a plot in Flash Forward? I'm shocked, I hadn't noticed one.
Loved the special effects on Doctor Who.
I'm watching Chuck off and on, and that's about it really.
Yep, enjoyed watching The Waters of Mars but it just felt…wrong; completely agree the whole “Timelord Victorious” thing was too out of character, too forced, the whole plot seemed to be mere background to spotlight a character flaw in the Doctor to lead towards the ringing of the Cloister Bell, the Ood prophecy, etc.
I've got the Cities of Gold song on my iPhone, it was covered by a local band and it is pretty awesome.
I have had it confirmed now that the book of Flash Forward is good and has a plot.
Chuck is a series I need to check out, I've been saying that for ages. You should check out Better off Ted, I think you'd like it.
It just felt like filler to me, I fully expect the next episode to be really awesome.
I'm (slowly) watching Goodnight Sweetheart. That show just puts a smile on my face. I'd watched parts of it and am now watching it from the start.
oh, and of course I'm watching Steven Seagal: Lawman
ps tried some html markup in this comment. not sure if it will work though. edit it if needed, Lee.
I've been watching Fringe on Go! and been subjected to that god awful vampire diaries which, as far as I'm concerned, is just teenage soap with major suckage.
Am now facing the dreaded wait for supernatural to return.
Thank you for checking this out for me.
The biggest problem I have with Flash Forward is Joseph Fiennes. They're trying to write him as some kind of “do anything to get the job done” rebel like Jack Bauer, but he just can't pull it off. He's got one expression which he does for the whole show – a kind of squinty-eyed grimace, like he's taking a dump. Once you've noticed this, it's impossible to pay attention to anything he says.
