When someone asks what my favourite film is I often have a little bit of a brain melt as I try to compress thirty years of watching films down into a definitive film.

mini-ninjas-guardThis is generally an unattractive sight and people will move along politely avoiding eye contact with me after maybe the first three minutes or so.  I’m not really offended, it’s clearly the only course of action available to them at the time especially as they generally haven’t been warned.

So often I refuse to be drawn into the discussion, I mean I’ll heartily discuss films and generalise on the best films but never before have I locked down a top five.

Until this week.

I worked very hard on it, gave it some long consideration, then played Mini Ninjas on the Wii for a while but THEN I went back and thought some more on it.  I was surprised with the end result actually, one movie in particular after I realised that it makes the list.

So what are my top five movies?

Well you’re going to have to keep reading to find out!

I’m going to release a movie each day for the next five days as I countdown to my number one film of all time.

In the meantime (all 24 hours of it) I thought it might be fun to see if you guys can pick what my top five films are.  After three years (for some of you) you should have a generally good idea of my taste so leave a comment with the five films you think will be in my top five.

The person who picks the correct five (and only five) I’m sure I can send a couple of William Shatner paperbacks your way!!!!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
    The Little Mermaid
    Sin City
    The Proposition
    Puberty Blues

  2. Lauren says:

This is my attempt at your top 5, please don't hate me if I am completely off…

    In no particular order:

    Ironman
    Higlander
    Raiders of the Lost Arc
    Star Trek (new one)
    Xmen

  3. leesargent says:

Oh wow I wish I could comment on your list already!!! But I'm not giving anything away until tomorrow.

  4. Lauren says:

Oh man, I think I am having cognitive dissonance… I feel like Batman and Ghostbusters should be somewhere in there….

  5. Taezar says:

dangit – I totally forgot about Highlander and Ironman. I am still sticking with The Little Mermaid though!

  6. Taezar says:

Not often you get to use Cognitive Dissonance in a sentence outside of work – for me at least!

  7. Heath says:

This will probably show how much I *don't* know, but I'm gonna go with:
    Ironman
    Batman Begins
    Ghostbusters
    Highlander
    XMen

  8. arkonbey says:

    in order:
    Big Trouble in Little China
    Ghostbusters
    Iron Man
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn

  9. Ironman
    X-men
Star Trek II Wrath of Khan
    The Abyss
    Shawshank Redemption

Okay, the last one doesn't match but it's one of my favourites

  10. I'd like to go way out there with a “probably not” list:

The Little Princess (Shirley Temple version)
    Emma
    The English Patient
    Twilight
    Steel Magnolias

Two of these have made me fall into a coma (really good on plane trips), two have made me cry inconsolably for hours and one has such atrocious acting that I only watch it to tear it to pieces and may one day do so to the DVD case. Not telling which.

  11. Zac Martin says:

Batman (1989), Back to the Future, Star Wars and two others. Hehe.

  12. Jeff says:

I'm not going to try to make a list (but for the record, I think arkonbey is very close, and Big Trouble In Little China is definitely on the list).

I do want to say that I COMPLETELY understand the whole brain melting thing. So I am impressed that you are even attempting this. I don't think I'd have the guts.

  13. Arjan says:

    Big Trouble in Little China
    Escape from NY
    Ironman
Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn
    Ghostbusters

Thinking of a top 5 for you is really darn hard.

  14. Dan Hughes says:
