So I finally committed to it and I am now growing a moustache this year for Movember.  Now I’m not just growing any old moustache to help raise awareness and funds for men’s health – specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.  No I am growing the ultimate in manly man moustaches:

The Magnum PI Mo

That’s right I am taking on the challenge for one month to go from:

Pre Magnum PI Mo Lee

to this:

magnum pi
So why is this so important that I would take my usual Miami Vice Stubble to Magnum PI Mo?*

You see what a lot of people don’t realise is that close to 3,000 men die of prostate cancer each year in Australia alone and one in eight men will experience depression in their lifetime – many of whom don’t seek help. I’ve had my own brushes with men’s health issues, so that and those facts have convinced me that I should get involved and I am hoping that you will support me.

To sponsor my Mo, you can either:

  • Click this link http://au.movember.com/mospace/204841/ and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account
  • Write a cheque payable to ‘Movember Foundation’, referencing my Registration Number 204841 and mailing it to: Movember Foundation, PO Box 292, Prahran, VIC, 3181

Remember, all donations over $2 are tax deductible (in Australia).

Movember is now in its sixth year and, to date, has achieved some pretty amazing results by working alongside The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCFA) and beyondblue: the national depression initiative. Check out further details at: http://au.movemberfoundation.com/research-and-programs

If you are interested in following the progress of my Mo, click herehttp://au.movember.com/mospace/204841/. Also, http://au.movember.com has heaps of useful information.  I’ll also be keeping everyone up to date via my Flickr, Twitter, Facebook and of course here at QYDJ!

Thank you guys!!  Any support you can give will make my day!!!!

Nice! Been reading Manga lately? I am officially demanding a series of these stand-alone, original character pieces. Not commissioning, just demanding. I'm like that ;)

I think the licensed character ban will be great for your art. The added benefit is that it will allow you to sell and display your pieces easier.

I've become really obsessed over the style of manga and the way it lends itself to graphic storytelling. So yeah I guess you can expect to see more of the same – I've got at least a couple more standalone pieces coming!!!

Will the moustache make you lean to the right like Magnum PI too?

OK, that is TOO wierd! I was in our staff room yesterday, and the TV was on. It was showing none other than Three Men and a Little Lady, starring Tom Selleck! I said to my workmates that I should grow one of THOSE for Movember! Strange!

Truth is, my face fails me miserably in the top lip department (bald patch right under the nose!) and my wife is allergic to facial hair! But now that I “know” someone who is participating in Movember, I have a “Face” to sponsor! Cool!

I have major family history with Prostate Cancer, and my dad is just coming out the other side of a prostatectomy with results looking good. I've also “enjoyed” the company of the ol' Black Dog, and recognize the important job that Beyond Blue does. Both are important causes worthy of sponsorship. May you have more success joining the gap in the middle of the lip than I!

Sadly, I'd need about a year to get something as epic as that growing on my face.
    Great cause.

  6. leesargent says:

Yes LOL I think it will, I imagine it's the weight of the awesomeness caught up in Magnum's moustache that is causing the lean…

Damnit! Should have photoshopped a lean in!!!

  7. leesargent says:

Wow an absolute HUGE thank you to you for supporting me and Movember! You are a legend!!

For me it's a WIN WIN situation, raise money for something that is SO important and if all goes to plan have a little slice of awesomeness right under my nose. Although I have never had a moustache before apart from a handle bar one (which is one step under a goatee so I don't think it is as bold as going the Magnum PI).

Super glad that it's looking good at this stage for your Dad!!

PS My wife is being really supportive of the Magnum PI mo – I wonder how she'll feel in week three :)

  8. leesargent says:

I am worried I have bitten off more than I can chew with this – I'm a little worried that Tom Selleck has access to the magic star stuff used to make up the universe and that's what goes into his moustache.

It'll at least be an interesting experiment to see if my life will change :)

Annnnnnnnnnnnd now I have visions of Higgins aka Robin Masters with Apollo and Zeus running madly about….

  11. leesargent says:

Aw no – I hope I don't slip and grow a Higgins Mo!!!

  12. Arjan says:

or he did an Agassi on his moustache…will we ever know ;)

  13. Arjan says:

I've got a 1,5 weeks beard at the moment, but it's gone tomorrow. It grows fast enough..but I'm not able to sport anything like PI's moustache, far too thin..let alone that it suits me hehe

It took a bit of a getting used to, seeing you shaved like this…always strange when you're used to something else.

  14. leesargent says:

Everyone is saying how young I look – but I've been clean shaven like this in the last couple of months – it must be the Magnum PI clothes :)

  15. Ian Marshman says:

You look weird clean-shaven, but there's no worthier cause to expose your top lip. Good on you for getting involved.

  16. leesargent says:

Thank you for your support too, I really appreciate it and the best part of all this is that it really is a cause that I feel strongly about, men's health in general, we're a terrible bunch for looking after ourselves.

Nice to see you around (virtually of course) we should have some coffee some time and you catch me up on what it's like being a dad!

  17. Ian Marshman says:

Absolutely.. Just as long as you fill me in your insights into being an uncle ;-)
