No one was more surprised than me when I discovered that I was eagerly awaiting not one but two Woody Harrelson films coming out later this year (hopefully, sometimes these things can be a little sketchy here in Australia).  The first film is Zombieland despite being a little tired of zombies, I’m still intrigued by them and this looks pretty fun.  The second film is Defendor and I think it is probably more interesting to me.

Defendor - markers Lee SargentThe story from what I can gather is about an ordinary guy who probably has some mental illness issues going on and assumes the superhero persona of Defendor, complete with masking tape D on his chest and black makeup mask.

I’ve read conflicting reports about how appealing the film is to superhero fans but I can’t help being reminded of my own idle thoughts regarding how with so much saturation in society around costumed superheroes that no one has actually dressed up as a ‘cape’ and gone vigilante (I think Kick Ass kind of explores this to a degree and probably other series too).  So I imagine that if it is not a superhero film and more a story portraying a man that is quite broken inside then I’ll be reasonably happy anyway.

I do really love the look of Defendor, there is something so naturally iconic about it and yet pathetically rooted in reality at the same time that makes me think that this is indeed what a real life Punisher may have looked like rather than the custom skull Kevlar guy we all love.

Anyway I really wanted to give the character a comic book treatment, hence the illustration above! click on the image to see it larger

Take a look at the trailer and let me know what you think, I don’t know what kind of release this is going to get but here’s hoping!

Very interesting! This has the potential to work on many levels. As a semi-parody of super heroes, as an analysis of the super hero mentality and as a deep and rather dark story of mental illness. It looks as though the laughs, while there, are not the focus and I hope that proves true for the movie. If they camp it up, it will suck, if they keep it straight, it may just rule.

Thanks for posting that, I haven’t heard of it until now.

Agree with everything you’ve said, exactly how I feel about the film, I might also add that it will need a really strong ending that often these concept films don’t really deliver.

I don’t want this to be another Hancock!

I think we can all agree on that :)

So I’m really torn on how I’d like it to end but I definitely don’t want to see him actually develop any real powers or have an actual costumed villain show up!

the title almost made me nót play the trailer, but watching it ..it convinced me that it might just be good if it abides to what Arkonbey’s already saying.
