• I have to say, while the Crystal Skull didn't grab me, it was ok. The boys LOVED it, in fact we bought CL the DVD for his birthday (it was in the bargain bin though lol)

But I find nowadays, I start to turn my nose up at sequels in general. I LOVED POTC, but rolled my eyes at the thought of a 3rd one and rightly so, I have never seen such a messy storyline. AND they are thinking of doing a 4th !!!!

Dear Mr. Spielberg, Mr. Lucas, and/ or Mr. Ford,  If it is true you are out there reading this, not only do I have several great ideas for IJ5, I have a query, synopsis, and finished script for you filled with plot twists, interesting characters, and a maguffin that both Jewish people and Christians will find fascinating. The plot's background revolves around an historical, Russian military incident.  As we all know, good scripts take time to evolve.  (Mine has been critiqued and rewritten three time over a period of years.)   The web has stated Mr. Spielberg is in the earlier stages of writing a new script.  If the franchise were to use my  script  in the meantime, it would free up time for the writing of an even better IJ 6script.    Providing you think my script is as good as I believe it to be,  we could have a win-win all around, especially for the audience as they would be delighted with the final two films. . . Now I know you are concerned about the legalities of even reading an outside script, but certainly a simple "script prenup" could be put together by your attorneys, if you decide to proceed past my query and read my script.Having said all this, may I send you a query?  You have nothing to lose but a few minutes of your  time.  If so, I can be reached email removed or by phone at number removed.  Thank you.

Hi Screenwriter - on the off chance that Stephen, George or Harrison do indeed read your generous offer and want to get in contact with you I will happily pass along your contact details, in the meantime I've removed them so you don't get wackos calling you in the middle of the night.
  • Dan
    Wow.
  • Lee
    Well said.
  • Screenwriter
    Thank you. I appreciate that.
  • Dan
I've given you a plug over on my blog. Whether it's done any good remains to be seen mind you.

I'm planning on recording my own contributions tomorrow morning if that's ok with you.

I saw the plug and felt kind of weird posting a comment but was going to single you out for very special mention (apart from the soundtrack contribution of course) - your contributions are already greatly appreciated and tomorrow is fine as I won't probably record until Saturday night (Australian time).

Anyone reading this who has not immediately gone over to Dan's blog, do so now.
  • I don't really have specific story ideas in mind. That's a job for accomplished and narratively intelligent storytellers. And also George Lucas.

I have one request: respect. Respect the character; his cinematic legacy; his movies' dedication to real-world, practical special effects; his strength and humor and humanity.

Spielberg has said that LAST CRUSADE was made partially as an apology to the fans for the dark unpleasantness of TEMPLE OF DOOM. I didn't need or want an apology then, but I'd sure like one now.

    Respect.

That's all I was asking for in Indiana Jones 4 and it wasn't forthcoming, as I mentioned in a comment above Temple of Doom was a product of its time I think, Indy 4 should have been a more consistently good film.
  • This would be a bad idea. Heck, the Crystal Skull itself was a bad idea.

Come to think of it, Temple of Doom and Last Crusade were also bad ideas.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is a work of genius that, like Star Wars, stands alone as one of the classics of cinema. Then, things went downhill. Fast.

Now, I'll go so far as to say there has never been a sequel as good as the original except for Aliens and ST: WoK (Hellboy 2 is arguable).

The Matrix. Pirates of the Caribbean. The (new) Fly. Rocky. Blade. Rambo. All fantastic films with terrible sequels (or worse... franchises).

    Thus ends the rant.

I don't think the 'there are no good as the original sequels' holds any water any more:

Terminator 2, Godfather 2, Empire Strikes Back, Dark Knight, Batman Returns, Superman 2, Mad Max 2, A Shot in the Dark, Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness, The Two Towers, The Good the Bad and the Ugly & For a Few Dollars More, Bride of Frankenstein, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, The Bourne Supremacy, Spider-Man 2, X-Men 2.

This is just off the top of my head and even if you want to argue that they aren't superior, they are at the very least equal to or enjoyable films in their on rights, I'd throw Rocky Balboa in there as well myself (in fact I don't have huge problems with the first three sequels, 5 is dodgy) and I know a lot of people who prefer Blade 2 to the first one. Actually even going back to the star trek example, the first one doesn't really rank as second place to WOK - I would rate several of the sequels above it.

Whilst Raiders will always be the best, Last Crusade is a solid Indy entry, followed by Temple of Doom as a throw back popcorn film (which was the intention I guess and a product of its time) and trailing behind is Indy 4 which didn't work so well because they misjudged the audiences. Then again maybe they didn't, I hear Transformers 2 is making a tonne of money.
  • Hmm. you might be right.

I could argue (and you must know I do want to), but, given its scope, this is the kind of discussion for hanging out over coffee/cocktails/beer, not for blog comments.

Definitely! There will be a day when I'm in your corner of the universe :)

I don't know. Some sort of machine to stop time and three years worth of lessons? I could probably manage it on the kazoo though.

Pfft instead of encouragement I shall now throw scorn at you for not waiting to learn the Indiana Jones theme on the ukulele.

    The kazoo shall suffice.
  • Dan
I've just this second finished writing this evenings blog post, but I'll plug the podcast tomorrow I swear.

and I'm going to think carefully about my response. but one thing for sure that Indy 5 should have: more Ukulele!
