I finally got some time to sit down, put pen to paper and to start clearing some of the backlog of commission work that I’ve got sitting in holding patterns.

The first piece that I’ve been working on (and the oldest request one) is for a DRD illustration.  DRDs are the little dudes who roam around the ship in Farscape, fixing stuff etc.

As always I work in mechanical pencil – generally a HB but I do have other leads for them, I’m just too lazy to change them.  The paper I’m using because it is a commission piece is on pure white, acid free, 250 g/m2 (90lbs) paper – A4 because it is easy to mail and people find it easiest to frame generally.

DRD commission piece - part 1

Once I have the drawing laid out in pencils I start the inking process, for this illustration I using my Faber-Castell PITT artist pens, they’re indian ink, water-proof (doesn’t mean they’re alcohol proof which my markers are based on) and are supposed to be quite light-fast.  To be honest I only dug them out my pencil case the other day and they are just nice pens to work with as long as you don’t run over them too much with markers.  Normally I wouldn’t use them in a colour piece because I have to be more careful.

DRD commission piece part 2

On the main DRD I’m using my ‘M’ pen for all the standard line work because I want the lines to be heavier on the main DRD.  I then use the ‘B’ pen which is a brush tip to fill in and add weight to some of the lines.

DRD commission piece part three

In the background I simplified the lines and left out a lot of detail, I used the ‘S’ pen which is a fine tip, probably in other terms a .5 tip, the M is a .8 by my guess. I couldn’t find any photos from Farscape in a hallway so I just went off memory, so I know it isn’t accurate but I wanted it generic anyway. I have toys of the DRDs including a custom 1812 so I used those as reference models.

I used a combination of Copic markers and a generic brand called Touch for the colour, I used a silver Sharpie for metallic highlights (you can’t see that in the scan) and a black Sharpie for the box.

I hope the client likes it.

That’s great thanks for saying so, I’m considering doing a series of Farscape pieces over the coming weeks.

Also I was having trouble seeing your website – let me know if you’d like the address updated.

Nicely done. You’ve really been working the markers. Your daubs are pretty impressionistic and work well.

I liked the DRDs, but always wondered how much Skutters were an inspiration…

I never watched Red Dwarf so wasn’t even aware of Skutters, I had to go onto wikipedia to check them out and there is more than a passing resemblance in concept at least. Of course I doubt it was an original idea in the first place.

You’ve never watched Red Dwarf? And you call yourself a Sci-Fi fan?

        Heh.

And I wasn’t knocking the DRDs; I was thinking homage not rip-off, myself.

LOL love the interwebz and it’s lack of tonal context – I wasn’t suggesting that you thought that the DRDs were a rip-off, I was just writing out loud my thinking about the idea of DRD/Skutters and where it comes from (the DRDs of Talyn bear more than a resemblance to the look of Skutters actually ).

Everyone I know that watches Red Dwarf absolutely loves it, but I’ve never been able to get into it. I know it’s weird.

Annie was showing Leechboy the DRD picture this morning and said to him that we would have to be careful the big DRD didn’t get stuck in the frame.

Further discussion led her to reveal that the little DRDs in the background are stuck in the frame and looking for a way out.

Which is really kind of cool and I don’t think she saw the episode of Farscape “Picture If You Will”.
