Over recent years I stopped watching a lot of reality television, I used to enjoy Survivor and The Amazing Race for numerous reasons that I won’t bother going into here but I bored of them after a while and pretty much swore off them (this is not an opening for you reality TV snobs to spit your bile everywhere – we know that a lot of reality TV is absolute trash so no need to act superior about it).

Tracey and I have however been watching MasterChef Australia, which for my international readership that might not know of it, is a cooking show where amateur chefs compete in cooking challenges etc.

I admit the show has sucked me in, we have favourites and of course villains but the best part of the show isn’t even on the show!

Double choc brownies with double cream and strawberries

You see Tracey and I were eating really poorly, same meals over and over, really poor processed junk, yes even vegetarians can eat badly!  Now after watching MasterChef we’ve been encouraged to plan out our meals and eat better, the dessert above is a prime example of this, double choc brownie with double cream and strawberries.  Yeah sure it’s probably not healthy but damn it tastes nice and it’s a lot better than some chocolate bar for dessert!

Two other meals that I’ve done over the last two nights:

Sweet potato frittata with tomato salsa

That’s Sweet potato frittata with tomato salsa – everything from scratch including the salsa (thank you chef Ramsey).

Spiced lentil soup

The other meal (tonight’s) was a spiced lentil soup served with a simple flat bread, again everything was made from scratch and I even got to use my coriander that Baxter has been guarding.

I think one of the smartest moves of the show was to put it on at dinner time, so for the last couple of weeks when we had pizza over and over again there was natural jealousy of what they were making on television.  I’ve always loved cooking and yet just haven’t been making the time for it.  It’s also been fun watching people’s reactions on Twitter.

Now to open my comic book themed restaurant!  (G’nort garden salads?)

You suck and so does master chef. One day the intellectuals will take over this country and kill reality TV and people like you who dare to even think it’s interesting.

We have that show over here too, apart from they don’t call it Masterchef Australia obviously.

I quite enjoy watching it, but it’s never inspired me to make anything nice unfortunately.

I think it actually comes from the UK originally doesn’t it?

What about your radishes though didn’t they inspire you to do something cool with your fresh produce?

I am loving MasterChef, same thing is happening here!

I definitely know where you’re coming from Lee. Julie’s my favourite contestant due to her natural flair with baking and pasteries, which will always be very close to my heart (blocking my arteries).

Another stroke of geneous was putting the master class episodes (where the chef Judges cook for the contestants) on Fridays. Like lots of other people, I don’t go out on Fridays and these episodes inspire me to try cooking. So far I’ve made a Pavlova from scratch that was edible. That’s it, but I’m sure I’ll cook something else one day.

    • Lee says:

Tracey is quite partial to Pavlova so we may have to try that one day, of course the cheesecake shop’s version is pretty hard to beat ;)

I never thought about the Friday slot either, you are right, certainly aiming for a certain demographic.

While MasterChef hasn’t hooked us, the Food Network in general has been a boon in this household. My wife is now very good at tagliatelle with smashed peas and sausage, and we’ve had some awesome meatloaf (which is saying something for me, as I’m not often a fan of meatloaf).

that dóes look very very good.
The problem with many cooking shows is that they always (very often) go for expensive or time-consuming (without running around like a madman) stuff. I want simple, affordable nice dishes.

    • Lee says:

We find when we’re cooking properly we tend to save more money than when we buy a lot of the pre-packaged stuff. The lentil soup was really cheap to make!

      • Arjan says:

a bit offtopic, but the comment forwarded to my mail looked like it was cramped together..(no white lines etc). Normally it’s not all pressed in one alinea :)
Does the cooking show have website with the recipes?

        • Lee says:

I figure it is just your computer, you should buy an Australian one…

Yeah I think they do have the recipes for everything on their site (site is linked in the post) – you can even download the show via mininova – not that I think you are familiar with downloading copywritten material :O
