In the never-ending onslaught of blog posts revolving around lists, I decided to make an angry stand against list writing.  Yes I know that it’s proven that readers love lists, and they are generally easy to write if you can’t think of anything else, but no damnit!  I’m sick of conventional thinking about blog writing, I’m not going to take it anymore!!!

Of course then my iPhone rang and the delightful melodies of the Dan Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle theme mix rang out and soothed this angry man and a list did flow forth.

So what five bands are always on my iPhone?

  • KISS
  • Queen
  • The Rolling Stones
  • Guns N’ Roses
  • The Beastie Boys

If I had to pick an alternate I would probably go with The Beatles or Radiohead, but since I said five, that is what the list shall be (for now).  With all five of the bands I have their greatest hits collections on the iPhone, I know that’s probably not the true fan way but some days I just want to listen to the hits rather than the whole albums.  I also limited it to bands, solo singers add too many to actually choose from.

So what five bands do you always have ready to go on your mp3 player of choice?

at least Radiohead brings you into the 21st century ;)

If you like the harder stuff, have you tried Scissorfight or Clutch?

Scissorfight might be a bit to regional (not just USA, not just Northeastern USA, but New England), but good stuff. Best song: “New Hampsire’s All Right If You Like Fighting”

Love Chemical Brothers and The Who, need to check out more of the other three. (This post is awesome because I’m just being recommended music!)

  3. Jayne says:

Rammstein, Scissor Sisters, The Living End, Queen, Cold Chisel

I never got into The Living End for some reason, I recognise how good they are but they just don’t click with me for some reason. I used to work with a girl who was pretty much their biggest fan so there must be something there!

  4. Ang says:

Lately (last few years), the constants have been Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dandy Warhols and Pendulum

There’s usually some Jebediah and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings on there too …

    • Lee says:

Yup, I’ve really got to pop some Weezer on there, I haven’t listened to them for ages and Queens of the Stone Age will make appearance every once and a while but I really pick and choose their songs and I wind up only listening to a couple of songs (I do this with a bunch of bands though – hence my gravitating towards greatest hits compilations).

  5. Arjan says:

Blue Öyster Cult, Disturbed, Faithless, Manau, Xzibit.

      I’m so old.

LOL I don’t know any of those bands.

      • Dan says:

Ha I win! I know who Blue Öyster Cult, Faithless, and Xzibit. is. Although you will know Blue Oyster cult is lee – they did Don’t fear the Reaper.

      • Arjan says:

strange thing you say old, because Blue Öyster Cult is mainly a 70s and 80s rockband (although they’re still making music).
You dón’t know Faithless (‘god is a dj’ doesn’t even ring a bell?) many hits in the 90s…
Disturbed..ok a bit understandable, a metal band, but worth checking out if you’re into it.
Manau (in Europe they had a hit with La tribu de Dana but they’ve got much more good music). French, I don’t understand around 90% of it..but great music nonetheless.

Xzibit..oh wait..he’s not a band..anyways..never watched pimp my ride? hmm didn’t Paparazzi make it to down under around 1996?

OK OK everyone make fun of old man Lee who’s mind is going on him – yup now I’ve connected the Blue Öyster Cult name in my head.

I didn’t know the band’s name who sang ’god is a dj’

I’m still in the dark over the other ones, hang on a second I’ve got to go get my hot water bottle and my boiled lollies.

  6. Dan says:

Ben Folds, Billy Bragg, Barenaked Ladies, Vampire Weekend, and Art Brut

I’m slightly less hardcore than you I suspect.

  7. Hi Lee,

You’ve lured me out of lurking with this one.

Got a new mobile phone recently (nothing great) and was setting up the ring tone – my choice was between GnR’s Sweet Child of Mine and the Stones’ Paint It Black. You’ll have to keep an ear out to see which one I picked…

Ladies and gentlemen we have outed a lurker!

      Be gentle :P

The phone didn’t come preloaded with those songs did it? Because if it did that is several shades of awesomeness.

Of course if you had to have two songs to pick from that’s not too shabby a choice!

Currently I have the Iron Man theme from the 60s cartoon (with all apologies to Dan’s version TMNT).

      • Dan says:

How Dare you! My TMNT song is pure genius.

How do you get mp3′s to play as ringtones on the iphone. I can’t work it out.

        • Lee says:

You unfortunately need to be a little tricky with the iPhone to put your own custom ringtones on there (changing the extension names and uploaded etc) – just Google it and there are a couple of methods to do it – me I got a program to do mine and it doesn’t always work so well.

  8. Not preloaded no, I had to load them on. I thought they had a decent intro for a ring tone. There are lots of good songs that just don’t have the intro for a ring tone…

    • Lee says:

Nice one, for some reason I read Sympathy for the Devil and I didn’t think that it had a good ring tone beginning (and it doesn’t) but Paint it Black certainly does.

You could have gone with the T2 song You Could be Mine as well

  9. Lauren says:

Stephen – heard Sweet Child ‘O Mine today – was impressed with ur ring tone choice!

Lee – what I think of ur list…

    No KISS on my iPod
Yes Queen (But I only one song)
    No The Rolling Stones
    Yes Guns N’ Roses
    YESSSSSS!!!! The Beastie Boys

    My List is:

    Live (Throwing Copper)
    The Beastie Boys
    Green Day
    Rage against the Machine
    Kanye West (I know…)

There are some others which are eternally on my ipod but if I had to choose would delete them over the above five; The Pixies, old school No Doubt, radiohead, pearl jam, Foo Fighters… there is probably more.

    • Lee says:

No love for KISS!?!? Only one Queen song!?!? You are killing me here.

I’ve been known to have some Kanye West on my ipod – I just don’t think he is as scary as some others in the music industry (irl conversation).

I think I had Live in there the other week, it’s another album (Throwing Copper) that I only listen to two or three songs.

The Beastie Boys are awesome, I didn’t know you are a fan!
