cover of batman and robin 1A flying Batmobile?

Really?

The Batmobile now flies like the vehicle in The Jetsons?

Really?

Seriously this is the biggest problem I had with the new Batman and Robin comic book line.

Unless you have no interest in comic books at all then you’ve probably heard the news, Bruce Wayne is dead and someone else is taking up the mantle of the Batman.  Now I know how Wayne died but please don’t ask me to explain it, it was one of those mishandled events in my opinion and even after reading Final Crisis I’m still a little fuzzy on the whole thing.

I just hope he isn’t brought back via another faith healer (once was quite enough thank you).

So I thought I would break my trade-paperback-only rule and buy a copy of the new Batman comic line Batman and Robin (I don’t know what’s happening to Detective and Batman, are they still ongoing?).  I’m glad I did because this one comic has given me so much to think about.

You see I’m coming into this fairly fresh as I’ve been avoiding Batman comics for the last year or two.  I read Knightfall once already, that was enough and also I didn’t feel like I had it in me to get up to speed on all the new characters including Damian, Bruce Wayne’s son who’s mother I assume is Talia?  There is also Red Robin? Well Red something anyway and of course Jason Todd is running around again.

Talk about days of our lives.

So all that aside Dick Grayson the former Robin and Nightwing is now Batman and his Robin is Damian Wayne, I don’t know where Tim Drake (the last Robin) is but I don’t think that is important at this stage anyway.

Damian is a punk.

He’s angry and arrogant.

This doesn’t worry me as I’m sure he’ll come to respect Grayson as Batman, that or he’ll be clubbed to death by the Joker somewhere in the Middle East… hang on a second, that happened already.

I’m also perfectly happy with Grayson as Batman, this was the natural progression of the Batman line and I look forward to him taking his place amongst the DC universe heavy hitters.

The artwork was different, but crisp and I find myself digging it, the writing as well is perfectly fine.  But the damn Batmobile flying?  What happened to the Batcopter?  Or the Batwing?

I just don’t like it.

PS: I know, I know it’s incredibly crass to try and jam an extra syllable into the Jetsons theme to accommodate my title.

    Not happy.

Especially as he died battling Darkseid. The new gots are the crappiest part of the DC universe aside from Mister Miracle who is cool (but only because of Giffen and DeMattis)

Some things are too iconic to mess about with. I’ll not be buying a batman title anytime soon. Although to be fair I haven’t bought any for ages anyhow. Or any comic. I don’t even do digital anymore becuase my laptop broke and I can’t read them in bed.

I’ve always like the extended batman family, although you’re right – it does get far too soap opera at times.

I shall take refuge in other forms of media, comics are just about dead to me now. I especially am enjoying the Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon. the last two episodes I watched have starred Gnort and Blue Beetle.

How do you like THEM apples!

I was unaware of young Mr G’Nort showing up on Batman Brave and the Bold – that show rocks out all shades of awesome.

He didn’t even really die properly either, he’s sitting in some cave waiting for iPods to be invented so he can MacGyver one into a time machine. Stupid.

I like them apples just fine Mr Damon.

In fairness that is probably the age that they are going for :P

But the Batmobile looks really dumb. Scratch that, the Batmobile is dumb.

      (can’t believe I’m saying that)

Oddly, for liking the character so much, the only Batman I’ve really read is Batman: Confidential, which I like (usually).

I got references to him and guest shots in a couple other series, though, and I read a bit online about what was going on. I gotta say… soap opera seems to be the appropriate term. I am completely (almost) lost with all the Robin changes, and deaths, and kids, and the like. I’m not sure I could follow a story now.

That said, if Bruce is toast, I’m glad Grayson got the cowl. I had heard that some chick got it, which did not please me.

I have heard from very reliable sources that Batman: Confidential is an excellent read. I might try and get into that instead.

I was reading the Batgirl series for a while there and it had some amazing artwork in it but I still wasn’t quite sure where it fits into the whole Batman universe.

Grayson should have the cowl, it’s the natural development of the character – problem is when they bring Wayne back.

I used to be a big fan of Batman, but I haven't been keeping up with the storyline.
Looks like now I too far behind!
