It has been a while since I really liked a Batman comic, I got back into reading them just before the whole Batman RIP thing started and found it was harder than an X-Factor comic for me to work out what was going on and who was doing what and that Bruce Wayne has a son.

Right.

Lot’s changed since I was reading them in the 90s.

But I’m just this minute about to settle down to read me some Battle for the Cowl and noticed the very last cover which I instantly loved!

Cover of GOTHAM GAZETTE: BATMAN ALIVE? #1 by Dustin Nguyen

The cover artist is Dustin Nguyen whom I don’t think I’ve heard of before and should not be mixed up with the Power Ranger actor (a mistake wikipedia made immediately).  I like the sketchiness and the capture of movement in their hair.  It feels like a fresh cover which is appropriate for a new age of Batman that I might even try and get back into.

Now in related comic book stuff I found a figurine in the local toystore that I was very tempted to buy.  The greatest DC comics character of all time, G’nort.

Expensive figurine of G'Nort

I’m reasonably sure that only Dan of the blog All that comes with it will understand why this figurine even exists in the first place, I believe he and are the only ones in the blogosphere who have read or at least remember (or own up to) reading Justice League International.

Just to clarify, yes that is a dog, yes he is wearing a Green Lantern outfit, no I don’t get it either and even though it is Australian dollars it is hard to fathom who would pay $44.95 for such a figurine.

That is a really cool cover! It almost makes me want to read Batman. Almost.

I’m sure somebody would pay $45 for a figurine of an obscure comicbook character, just for comic book geek cred if nothing else.

My wife suprised the heck out of me when she spent a similar amount on a Ghost Rider Action Figure (80′s Jonny Blaze). I prefer the 90′s Dan Ketch GR, but I’ll always treasure this one becouse she was 8 month pregnant when she did the legwork to track this down. I like it so much I’ve got it hanging on a hook in our bedroom. I can send in a photo if you’d like.

Is that the Marvel Select Ghost rider figurine? Because that’s a pretty sweet figurine in itself anyway. I got a couple of the movie ones which were good representations of the film version.

The other problem with this is that I don’t think the JLI characters work on their own and I think this is a series of five figurines which adds up!

The cover is pretty cool and I think that this week I will in fact be picking up a Batman and Robin #1 just for curiosity sake. He also did another cover which I didn’t see before writing this (I peeked at the ending) – http://www.thecomicfanatic.com/new%20images/bftcgz1.jpg – I love this if only for the cigarette smoke.

Obscure? Surely Gnort is the jewel in DC’s crown?

And I always think of him as a member of Justice League Antarctica rather than International.

Dan’s last blog post..I can’t believe I’m even going to blog about this

If he isn’t the DC crown jewel then I would propose that the Scarlet Skier and Mr Nebula would be possibly the only other contenders.

Why haven’t these characters had films made or ongoing comic series? Because DC have them as their ace in the hole. They will produce these characters in their darkest hour, I predict when Iron Man 2 becomes the biggest film in history that we’ll be seeing a G’Nort film!

Giffen / DeMatteis JL is my favourite DC book of all time – which probably explains why current DC leaves me so cold. A G’Nort toy would be cool… looks pretty expensive though.
