OK.

So this isn’t exactly the blog you all know and love.

I know, I know.

If you are reading this via the feedreader then maybe you haven’t noticed anything at all.  Well let me fill you in because to quote Starship Troopers (oh yes, THAT’s where we’re at) “Someone made a mistake, someone made a big goddamn mistake.”

Well actually that’s a little more melodramatic than the situation currently is at but it isn’t too far off.

You see I got sick of Quit Your Day Job getting hijacked by malware sites through Google Reader and the site has always run a bit slow on its host so I decided that it was time to move to a new faster hosting service.

Sure.  Just export your content and transfer over.

Well that would have been fine and dandy except the database is bloody huge!  And the export function was only exporting up until February and by the time I realised what had happened the transfer of domain had completed and WordPress is really hard to deal with when the URL isn’t working (no way to log into admin).

So I downloaded the database and it is really big, impractically big to deal with and so it is going to take me a while to upload all the old posts, that’s if I’m able to without wrecking this install.

I know that there is a lot of history in there and I’d be really upset if I lost it, but then we can’t cry over spilled milk can we?

So we’re going to soldier along, and look, we’ve already had two pop culture references already, it’ll be the same place you remember in no time!

Bummer! Good luck with it. I don’t know if it will be any use to you, but an article about dealing with large databases was brought to my attention recently.

    • Lee says:

Cheers for the link, I did read that after the initial disaster of it all. I think I have the way to fix the problem although I am concerned about the size of the database and I really want to look into a different way of archiving. I’m going to upload the database to a separate install of WordPress using the tool from that link and then export the old posts in batches by exporting and then deleting.

Painful process but it’s all good, I’m not too concerned that people don’t have access to my Yoda spell checking post

Well, that’s certainly not good. Good luck with this.

I was trying to catch up on the last podcat and was shocked to get a Host Gator error page. I’m glad I decided to try the home page.

Fwiw, it doesn’t appear that the old feed address is pushing this post – at least it didn’t for me.

    • Lee says:

It probably isn’t running through feed burner properly yet, although I don’t really understand why it wouldn’t just pick up where it left off.

If you have iTunes you can download the PodCat via that (I think).

  3. MC says:

Shall we consider the podcat delayed until this eventually gets sorted out (as I know it will).

    • Lee says:

Oh no, this is the smallest of blips on the RADAR! Everything rolls on as per normal, we’re talking memorable movie deaths this weekend :)

  4. Marita says:

    :: shudder ::

You have my empathy and sympathy and any other ‘pathy I can find to give you.

  5. Lee says:

LOL – OK – got to get threaded comments sorted.

  6. Sean says:

    oh that sucks.

    • Lee says:

I’m not too upset now, I had my tense sleepless night last night, but today I’m telling myself ‘reboot’ :)

I’m actually considering popping up an archive site to preserve the history a little.

  7. Arjan says:

I got here via your tweet about the post, my feedreader was blind to it.
I’ll wait and see if I have to put a new feed overhere or that it will work again.

I’ve got 2 movie deaths already in a conceptmail. I’m at my uncle & aunt’s place next week, I’ll certainly check out if they dó have a working microphone :D

    • Lee says:

The feed should fix itself as all the cache all over the place clears (fingers crossed – feed burner seems to think it will but I’m still waiting to see it change over in stupid Google Reader)

Don’t put yourself out dude regarding the Podcats!!

  8. Dan says:

I hadn’t downloaded the last podcat, and I can’t seem to get it on itunes. Arg.

Any chance of helping me out lee?

Dan’s last blog post..Cumbria Way, day one

    • Lee says:

Yup, because it’s you Dan, and only because it is you, I’ll upload last week’s Podcat tonight here in the new site.

I’m toying with losing the whole ‘PodCat’ name too.

      • Dan says:

Incidentally I really like the theme. So much so that I might steal it once you’ve finnished with it.

I am still trying to work out how I want my blog to look. The blue beetle and booster gold drawings will be used yet.

Dan’s last blog post..Cumbria Way, day one

  9. I was just catching up with your posts and was about to write to you and say Host gator was giving me a 404 (page not found) but you know.

Am looking forward to the pod cast.

It’ll be back up this evening, and i’ll probably post the others too in the same post so that they are here.

      It’s kind of exciting rebuilding.
