The big anticipation for me this year was obviously Star Trek and last year it was Iron Man, next year I suspect it will be Iron Man 2.  But even though the film that I was most hanging out to see this year has come and gone there is still a lot of 2009 film going left.

Five films that are coming out this year that I’m looking forward to are:

I want to see Transformers 2 despite really disliking the first one to see if any improvements have been made, I mean it looks really fantastic special effects wise, so who knows, maybe I’ll warm to the next generation’s Transformers.  G.I. Joe is on the list purely for interest sake, I’ve never been a significant fan of the franchise (?) but it looks as though it may be a bit of fun, I wonder how far they’ll take any of the violence etc.

Wolverine scribbleHaving finally watched the Harry Potter film that I missed seeing for some reason (which, I may add I’m still not sure how I missed it since Tracey had seen it), I was reminded of how much I really enjoyed those films and the books and so it will b nice to go see an old friend.

Studio Ghibli produces the best animated films in the world and even though Disney is slapping their name on Ponyo I see no reason why this won’t continue to be so.

Moon looks interesting and quite a departure from the flashy science fiction of Star Trek, if you haven’t seen the trailer you should go check it out because it looks really intense.  District 9 also looks to be a neat scifi movie, I watched the original short film on youTube and thought that would make a cool film and hey they delivered!

Avatar is either going to be hugely awesome and amazing and mind blowing or it will be The Abyss…

…I’m kidding, I love The Abyss.  Avatar is just putting so much anticipation out there that it’s hard to believe that it could be as good as its promise, but it will be pretty good if it does!  I’ve been avoiding much to do with it and have only a vague sense of what it is about, although the 3D aspect is… well I was going to say interesting but to be honest I can’t say I’m all that interested in 3D.

The second film in my list to have 9 in it of course is 9 (apparently there is a Nicole Kidman film called ‘Nine’ coming out but I doubt that I’ll accidentally see that).  9 is along the lines of the stop motion look and feel of Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas.  I think it looks really interesting.

Inglourious Basterds is a must see, looks like a great cast and even though Tarantino has swung and missed in the past, it has been rare and not that bad anyway.  So what I’m saying here is that even if it isn’t his best work, it certainly won’t be awful.

And finally we have Sherlock Holmes, which judging by the trailer looks like a lot of fun despite having Jude Law in it.  Robert Downey Jr has been on a bit of a roll with Tropic Thunder and of course Iron Man so I’m reasonably confident that this should be alright.

I’m not sure about sherlock holmes, I suppose I need to keep an open mind but the director’s pedigree leaves a lot to be desired. I’m huge Holmes fan, and would rahter no film than a crap film.

I was talking about this years films with Kerry the other day. Last year I was excited about a lot of summer blockbusters. but this year there is just nothing that inspires me.

I only had my heart set on Star Trek this year so anything else that comes out that I really love is just gravy.

I think the Sherlock film is not going to mesh well with the established view of Holmes in literature (of which I am a huge fan). So I’m just going to go with this being an ‘interpretation’ and not canon (for want of a better term).

Oh, and I’ve noticed that 3D is really taking off these days, especially with kids animation. I’ve yet to see anything in 3D, but it’s probably just a matter of time. I suspect it has a lot to do with filmmakers trying top add value to movies in order to combat piracy. The same can be said of Disney’s push of blu-ray products (which of course I’m currently benefiting from, the sell out that I am.

I hadn’t thought of 3D as a piracy weapon, that’s an interesting idea.

PS. I’ll swap you my sumo lounge for some blu-ray :P

That was just to keep you on your toes. Our local cinemas are not so great and it’s really painful making our way into the CBD on weekends and especially after hours so i’m forced to really weigh up seeing a film at the cinema.

I won’t probably even see a third of these at the cinema.

Argh… I’ve been procrastinating on making this year’s list. To comment on yours, there are a few I wasn’t aware of, though I saw the trailer for 9 when I saw Star Trek. That one was one of those that if I was not a parent, I’d go see. It’s not quite at the level of negotiating babysitting logistics, but it looks really interesting.
